How quickly should I lose weight?
Understand a sensible weekly weight-loss rate, normal scale fluctuations and when to adjust your plan.
FuelTrain provides general educational information, not medical advice. We use recognised UK public-health sources, avoid guaranteed results and clearly separate estimates from facts.
Fast changes on the scale are not always body-fat changes. A useful target is steady progress that you can maintain while eating adequately and continuing normal activity.
1. A common weekly target
The NHS commonly advises aiming for around 0.5 to 1 kg, or 1 to 2 lb, per week. Some people will lose more slowly, especially as body weight decreases.
2. Why daily weight changes
Hydration, salt, carbohydrate intake, bowel contents, training soreness and hormones can move scale weight up or down. Compare weekly averages under similar conditions.
3. When to seek support
Speak to a GP or appropriately qualified professional if you have a medical condition, take medication that affects weight or appetite, suspect an eating disorder, or are unsure whether weight loss is appropriate for you.
